As civil engineering activity continues to progress in Sydney, it is exciting to see development after development take the Sydney Metro project another step closer to completion.
Although the line is open expected to open in 2024, the project is quickly ramping up, with the NSW government calling for tenders to build two twin metro tunnels under Sydney Harbour. The government states that it will award the tunneling contract in mid-2017, but has already shortlisted two consortia; Ferrovial, Acciona and BAM Joint Venture and John Holland, CPB and Ghella Joint Venture.
This is certainly a positive step, with the Sydney Harbour tunnels just part of the equation. The tender will also include all tunnelling and station excavations across the CBD.

Of course, as we have reported over the past 18 months, there has already been extensive tunneling and construction at one of the first stations. Cudgegong Road is the start of the Northwest line, and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance noted the progress thus far.
“We’re cracking on with delivering this megaproject for Sydney, and the hive of construction activity is continuing in the North West,” he said.
“The frame of the first platform is in place at Cudgegong Road – one of 31 metro stations along the 65 km route.”

At a length of 187 m and width of 9 m, it is expected that the station will service a growing population in Sydney’s west. – 48 km northwest of the city. In fact, there will be trains stopping at Cudgegong Road every four minutes when the line is up and running.
Before this stage, there are a number of construction activities to complete across the 590,000 square kilometres. These include spoil removal, station construction, general civil works, station construction and fit-out, station precinct works, systems fit-out and testing and commissioning.
